REFIND: Exhibition/Wayfinding

Theme
Refind: Ten perspectives on how design filters through ambiguity.

Inspiration
The exhibition was sectioned into three phases: find, refine, and refind. We portrayed how we search for purpose, filter out ideas, and discover new meanings. One of the inspirations behind the branding was “The Squiggle of the Design Process.” The line drawing created by Damien Newman of IDEO captures the nature of the design process that changes from a state of erratic exploration to a state of polished execution. Accordingly we encouraged our audience to explore the exhibition and make new discoveries along the way.

Interactive
Upon entering the gallery, the viewer encounters an elaborate accent wall. Hanging red acrylic panels near this focal point invite the viewer to explore messages hidden on the walls. The walls feature a design that uses chromatically opposite colors: red and cyan. When gazing through a red acrylic panel, the human eye perceives the red colors as low contrast against the red plastic filter and the filtered cyan colors appear black. This red filter allows the viewer to more easily discern the cyan text. Progressive refinement in the design process relates to the use of the red filter. The viewer is able to decipher specific elements at distinct points of observation.

Accessible
In order to make our exhibition a universally enjoyable experience for all, all signage followed the Smithsonian Guidelines for Accessible Exhibition Design. Planning legible and accessible elements was an essential part of sharing our work with the public.

Marketing & Wayfinding
Marketing and wayfinding materials included brochures, invitations, courtyard signage, hallway posters, exhibit entrance poster, vinyl elevator signage, giveaway posters, and custom pins.
